McALLEN, Texas (AP) - Four smugglers have been sentenced to prison over a case where three suspected illegal immigrants were struck and killed on a South Texas road.

Prosecutors in McAllen on Thursday announced the punishment for four people who in September pleaded guilty to conspiracy to harbor illegal immigrants.

Investigators in June discovered three bodies on a road in Duval County. Authorities believe the three were hit by a vehicle while trying to pick up food and water.

Brenda Abi Bazaldua-Mariscal was sentenced to five in prison, while 10-year terms were ordered for Canuto Rodriguez Jr. and Genaro Gomez. They are from Mission.

Maria Del Carmen Martinez-Fraga, described by prosecutors as an illegal immigrant, was ordered to serve eight years in prison.

A total of 15 suspected illegal immigrants were detained.
