    Illegal immigrant sues Alabama over legal defense he got in murder prosecution

    MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — An illegal immigrant who pleaded guilty to murder is suing Alabama officials, claiming the defense he got at taxpayer expense was inadequate.

    Cenobio Sanchez says Houston County's system of contract defense attorneys doesn't provide adequate legal representation for people who are too poor to hire a lawyer. His suit seeks to become a class-action case.

    One of the defendants, Houston County Commission Chairman Mark Culver, says there's something wrong when a person who's in the country illegally can file such a suit.

    The court-appointed attorney who represented Sanchez, Valerie Judah, says he wanted to plead guilty because he thought the judge would send him back to Mexico. Instead, he got a 40-year sentence for murder and five years for having a fake Social Security card and work permit.
