A man who was arrested in connection with car break-ins in Penfield wound up as a suspect in a homicide in Puerto Rico.

Felix O. David-Marrero, 18, of Puerto Rico, was charged with third-degree criminal mischief and petit larceny in connection with the Penfield vehicle break-ins, which occurred early Monday, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.

David-Marrero was one of four people arrested in connection with those crimes.

Deputy Hector Sotomayor, a native of Puerto Rico, was called to translate for and help interview David-Marrero and another Spanish-speaking suspect after they were arrested.

Sotomayor recognized many inconsistencies in the story of David-Marrero — who had been using a fake name — and contacted police authorities in Puerto Rico.

Sotomayor learned that David-Marrero was wanted for questioning in a shooting homicide that occurred in Puerto Rico on Friday.

Puerto Rican authorities requested assistance with interviewing David-Marrero for the homicide, and he allegedly confessed to shooting a man.

Proceedings are now under way to extradite David-Marrero to Puerto Rico, the Sheriff’s Office said.

The others arrested in the Penfield break-ins were Alfredo Rivera, 20, of 157 Conkey Ave.; Jonathan Santiago-Dejesus, 17, of Puerto Rico; and a 15-year-old juvenile, whose name was not released. They also were charged with third-degree criminal mischief and petit larceny.
