Illegal Immigrants Getting Day Labor Jobs

(CBS 5 News)--Members of the Minuteman Project targeted day laborers who congregate in neighborhoods waiting for pickup. They staged their protest outside a home improvement store and were matched by supporters of the immigrants.

It's one of Arizona's biggest issues. And in the driveway of a major home improvement store the arguments hit home.

Members of the Minuteman Project targeted day laborers who they say don't have the right to the jobs they're getting.

Stacey O’Connell – Minuteman Project said, “This is what the city refers to as organized illegal immigration day labor centers and day labor pickup sites and the Phoenix citizens think that it’s unacceptable and we’re not tolerating it anymore.

As loudly as the Minutemen protested, the day laborers had their supporters too.

Salvador Reza-Day Labor Coordinator said, “Day laborers are hard working people. They’re people who want to feed the family. They want to be able to live a decent life.

The two groups mingled with one another as Phoenix Police kept a watchful eye on the protest and counter protest.

By the time the protest and counter protest ended the two sides agreed on one thing. The immigration policy this country has right now needs fixing.
