Illegal immigrants jump in with couple in broken-down car

GILA BEND, AZ (CBS5) -Three men trying to cross the border jumped into a vehicle with an unsuspecting couple and landed behind bars.

The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office said a husband and wife had blown a tire and pulled off on the side of the road north of Gila Bend. The woman said several strangers got into their vehicle. When she started screaming, the men jumped out and ran eastbound back into the desert.

Deputies found the suspects about 80 yards from the roadway and they were taken into custody on state human smuggling charges.

Investigators learned the men had paid between $300 and $2,000 to be smuggled into the U.S. with their destination being Phoenix.
