Re the article, "Undocumented immigrants find they don't qualify for hurricane help" (Nov. 14): As an American-born citizen and the husband of a legal Chilean immigrant, I have little, if any, compassion for illegal immigrants.

In our efforts to bring my wife to this country on a fiancée visa in order to marry, we spent thousands of dollars, many months apart, and many days off work to go through the nightmare of organizing and filing the necessary immigration paperwork to make sure we were doing everything "by the book." In other words, we earned it!

One's presence in this country does not confer upon him/her the rights and privileges granted to its citizens and lawful residents. How dare an illegal immigrant complain about not receiving help from a government from which he has not earned legal status as a resident? No matter how unfortunate his situation, his presence in the United States is not legal, and the only rights afforded to him should be his basic human rights. He should not be eligible to receive my tax money.
