FORT MOJAVE - Five illegal immigrants were apprehended Monday afternoon during a routine traffic stop near the intersection of Highway 95 and Boundary Cone Road.

The driver of the vehicle, Antonio Malagan, 19, of Lake Havasu City, was arrested on suspicion of smuggling, according to Trish Carter, a spokeswoman for the Mohave County Sheriff's Office.

The black pickup truck was southbound on the highway loaded with various pieces of construction equipment and towing a cement mixer when deputies noticed that there were no tail lights on the trailer, the license plate was not visible and the windows on the cab were tinted. The vehicle had eight occupants.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement assisted deputies in determining the legal status of the passengers concluding that five of them were in the country illegally. They were taken to the sheriff's office substation in Mohave Valley, along with Malagan.

The five illegal immigrants were picked up by the Border Patrol later in the afternoon.

No further information was immediately available.
