Illegal immigrants to stand trial over identification forgery

St. Louis — Three men identified as illegal immigrants face federal charges in a ring that may have supplied hundreds of false identifications to other people, authorities said Wednesday.
In addition, 15 other alleged illegal immigrants face likely deportation, U.S. Attorney Catherine Hanaway said. All 15, and the three suspects, are from Mexico.

Ivan Anguilo-Lopez, 19, Freddy Avila-Casas, 24, and a man tentatively identified as Candido Cruz, 26, were indicted for making and selling counterfeit documents, including Social Security cards, permanent residence cards and driver's licenses.

Authorities said they used a computer and laminating machine. Hanaway said Cruz may be using a false name.

The men were indicted Oct. 25. They were arrested Tuesday.

James Ward, who heads the St. Louis office of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency, said the fake documents were "pretty decent" replicas. The documents would sell for about $75 to $125, he said. Officials said the other illegal immigrants did not appear to be involved in making the documents.
