Illegal immigrants -- a WH favorite?

An immigration expert and border enforcement advocate says President Barack Obama continues to display a peculiar preference for illegal immigrants over U.S. citizens.

As reported earlier by OneNewsNow, the governor of Alabama has signed a law that is said to be one of the toughest deterrents to illegal immigration around the country. That law, scheduled to go into effect in September, makes it a crime to be an illegal alien in Alabama, and allows law enforcement officials to detain anyone they have a "reasonable suspicion" of being in the country illegally.

The new law has been the target of several lawsuits, including one recently filed by the Obama Justice Department. The DOJ has already filed similar suits against other states, such as Arizona, that have implemented laws in an attempt to reduce illegal immigration in the U.S. -- typically the responsibility of the federal government.

Jessica Vaughan serves as director of policy studies at the Center for Immigration Studies. She says Alabama is only trying to enforce federal law.

"That they should get sued for that is pretty outrageous," she exclaims. "When the federal government fails to do its job, all the costs are borne by state and local governments in terms of job losses and the cost of social services and the cost of the crime that is associated with illegal immigration."

But Vaughan says she is encouraged by the recent decision by the Third U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, which -- under order from the U.S. Supreme Court to re-examine the case -- vacated its own ruling that declared unconstitutional the immigration ordinance in Hazleton, Pennsylvania. That community's Illegal Immigration Relief Act would deny permits to businesses that hire illegal immigrants and fine landlords who rent to them.

"Hazleton was the first to try this -- and when the liberal judges ruled against Hazleton, everybody said ... all the state legislation is a waste of time, it's never going to survive judicial muster," says Vaughn. "But people kept on trying, and their approach has been validated."

The CIS spokeswoman says as long as Obama continues to favor illegal aliens over American citizens, states like Alabama are going to have no choice but to do what they can to gain control over the problem of illegal immigration.
