We don't have time for Minutemen

We don't have time for Minutemen

While the Department of Homeland Security's response to Hurricane Katrina was pathetic, there has been no larger failing for the DHS than its failure to protect our borders. The Minuteman Civil Defense Corps, a citizen patrol, will be working the border this month trying to help pick up the slack from our spread-too-thin Border Patrol.

Californians show some ambivalence about the issue. According to a Field Poll last month, while more than three quarters of Californians are concerned about illegal immigration, they're split on whether Gov. Schwarzenegger should call a border emergency. And 56 percent are opposed to citizen border patrols.

This isn't surprising given the demonization of citizen patrols by politicians and the media. George W. Bush had the nerve to call the Minutemen "vigilantes." All the Minutemen do is observe and report criminal activity to Border Patrol agents. For years Fairfield has had a citizen's group that observes and reports crime to police. But when citizens do it down on our border, they're portrayed as a lynch mob.

It's George Bush's failure to protect the borders that created citizen border patrols. The Pew Hispanic Center recently reported that there are now more people entering this country illegally than legally. The number of non-Mexican illegals is surging. How hard would it be for al-Qaida, Hamas, or some other terrorist cell to slip in through our southern border?

The other epithet used against citizen's groups is that they're racist. Now I'll fight racism tooth and nail when I see it, but in this case it's a smokescreen. You don't see the Minutemen up in arms over legal immigration. Some of the Minuteman are of Hispanic origin. Is it really the morally superior position to encourage these poor people to sneak across the border to be exploited, working hard for substandard pay? It's not their well-being we care about; it's what they can produce for us.

In the past year, 464 died trying to sneak into this country, a 43 percent increase over the previous year. In the first half of this year, 14,000 children aged 5 to 15 were caught trying to cross the border without parents or guardians. We've got to stop this.

You have the two parties fighting for the Hispanic vote while enforcing the laws of the nation in this

post-9-11 world is somehow a secondary concern. This isn't a matter of liberal or conservative. It's a matter of right and wrong.

Los Angeles and San Bernardino Counties will start screening their jail populations for illegal aliens, who will be turned over to INS upon release. Prior to the recent changes in their laws, police were prohibited from doing so. These "sanctuary laws" that prohibit law enforcement from turning over illegals to the feds are rampant. That's insane.

I know that the overwhelming majority of illegal immigrants are law-abiding people coming here to work. But also among them are drug smugglers, criminals and possibly terrorist cells. Up to two-thirds of felony arrest warrants in LA are for illegals. They make up over half of some street gangs. And the burden they place on services and hospitals simply is not fair to citizens. It's not fair to legal immigrants who play by the rules.

My hat is off to citizen border patrols that observe and report crimes to INS. If you don't like it, then tell Gov. Schwarzenegger to declare a state of emergency and tell George Bush to start doing his job. Peace.
