Illegal Immigration Debate Continues In Tulsa
    KOTV - 9/19/2006 10:59 AM - Updated: 9/20/2006 10:34 AM
Illegal immigration is a hot topic across Oklahoma right now, the cost of illegal immigration to taxpayers. At a hearing Tuesday in Tulsa, people on both sides of the issue spoke out about how it's affecting Oklahoma taxpayers.

The state Labor Department wants more information about the affects on Oklahoma so they're asking for the public's help.

News on 6 anchor Terry Hood says the state Labor Department asked Tulsans about how illegal immigration affects them.

Contractors, concerned citizens, and representatives from state agencies took the stage Tuesday morning. They all agree illegal immigration affects taxpayers and the labor department says they want to know just how much.

State officials have held three public meetings to gather data from real people about the cost of illegal immigration and it's affects on wages in the state.

State Labor Commissioner Brenda Reneau says Minnesota conducted similar hearings and their findings were astonishing. Tuesday's meeting was the last of three and Reneau says the response has been very informing. "Most people come with an open mind but concern and I’m very pleased that people care enough to show up."

Adrian Privett with the Carpenters Union: "if we continue to allow unscrupulous contractors to take advantage of these workers out there. Then we're not doing our parts as human beings to rectify the problem. If we keep turning a blind eye then it's not going to help."

If you were unable to attend Tuesday's hearing, you can send them your opinion in an email at publichearing@oklaosf.state.ok.us.

Why can the state labor departments figure this out while the US Department wants to keep it in the dark?

I guess it depends on the secretary.

From what it say`s, they want the opinions of the people and how they are affected by it.

From where i`m at, most of the time the opinion of the people don`t mean @#!%.
