Gees! How about if they talk to someone besides the business leaders. They are the ones making money off of the illegals. They should be listening to the people like you and me. The only people I ever talk to who are for illegals are the big businessmen in town.

Illegal immigration discussions begin Friday for Nebraska

A series of roundtable discussions in cities across Nebraska begins Friday as part of the Legislature's effort to understand the depth of illegal immigration in Nebraska.

The meetings will take place in Grand Island, Lexington, Scottsbluff, North Platte, Schuyler and South Sioux City.

Discussion generally is to be limited to community leaders - including health, business, education and law enforcement officials - who were invited by the state senator who represents that respective district.

Public hearings will be held later on any legislation proposed as a result of the meetings, said State Sen. Brad Ashford, chairman of the Legislature's Judiciary Committee.

"It's a fact-finding mission," the Omaha senator said.

A group of illegal immigration foes, meanwhile, has called its own public hearing. A news release by the Nebraska Taxpayers for Freedom and the Nebraska Advisory Group said the Judiciary Committee is trying to "muzzle the voices of those who oppose illegal immigration by denying them the opportunity to speak."

The group announced a forum in Omaha on Monday from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Westside Community Center, 108th and Grover Streets.

Ashford said the goal of the Judiciary Committee is to develop immigration-related legislation for the 2009 legislative session.

The committee plans also to research other states' efforts to address the illegal immigrant population.
