Illegal immigration across the southwest border has doubled in the last four months, according to new government data that suggests the early gains of President Trump’s tenure are wearing off.

More than 30,000 illegal immigrants were nabbed in August, up 22 percent compared to July and up nearly 100 percent compared to April, when fewer than 16,000 illegal immigrants were arrested by the Border Patrol or stopped at ports of entry by Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers.

The numbers are still lower than they were a year before under Mr. Obama, but the gains Mr. Trump made in his first months in office are dissipating.

Officials say the number of people caught is a rough yardstick for the total flow, so more apprehensions means more people are trying — and succeeding — in getting through.

The spikes were apparent across a number of demographic sectors. Cubans, Haitians, illegal immigrant children traveling alone and families traveling together all posted increases.

Likewise every sector along the U.S.-Mexico border saw increases in the number of illegal immigrants nabbed by agents.

Officials took heart in the numbers still trailing the 2016 totals.

“These numbers represent a 41 percent decrease as compared to August of 2016, and year-to-date totals for FY 2017 are 24 percent lower than the same period in FY 2016,” CBP said in a memo detailing the new numbers.

The surge could add urgency to Mr. Trump’s call for border security to be attached to any new bill to legalize illegal immigrant Dreamers.

That still sucks. We want troops on the border, this traffic stopped 100% by all means necessary, whatever it takes. 24% reduction is nothing in the scheme of it all. We want it all stopped. Now.

This needs to be handed over to our Military and get that WALL built.

They were given authorization to build the Alaskan Highway due to fear of Japanese invasion and they should be given authorization NOW to get down there and get it done!

Damn right we are. An invasion is exactly what it is, the epitome of the "Trojan Horse".

President Trump should have put those 4K troops on our border - not sent to Afghanistan.

Our own country is where our interest and well being should be protected.

The wall will not stop the loaded with illegals truck traffic; many have been in the news recently (at least the ones that got caught). Believe there is a direct highway route for trucks and apparently they are not checked for contents of trailer.

That's because they all want to get in with fraudulent application for DACA before it ends.

Well there is a new Sheriff in town and I hope Sessions sends the directive that ALL applications and renewals will be extremely vetted and put in the chit can.

Yeah, now that new applications are OVER, thank God, no more incentive there. I think there was a big push by the Mexican and Central American countries to try to flood US before DACA ended. Well, it's over now, that door is closed.

Something else I was thinking about too, is the fact that Border Patrol has been increased a little bit and certainly re-motivated by the Trump Administration, so their arrest rates are probably higher as a result of that than in past years which would change the % of apprehensions versus border crossings. In other words, if Border Patrol is doing a better job and apprehending at a higher rate through improved performance, then this would produce more apprehensions without any increase in border crossings. Bush and Obama did crap on that, it was basically a lay down and wave them in, so if BP is now actually doing the job they're supposed to be doing then that alone could explain the higher number of apprehensions without any associated or related increase in border crossings. It make take some time to really understand the numbers and what is really going on.

All the new policies and programs, from ending DACA, Catch and Release, Sanctuary Cities, ramping up deportations especially of the criminals, multiple misdemeanors, repeat deportees, welfare users and visa-overstays, requiring E-Verify, reducing the backlog in deportation hearings to get the deportation orders with more immigration judges and putting them on the road to detention centers to do a whole bunch at once, repealing the tax credit welfare, building the wall, other improved border security measures, and many more policies in the works ... will all start coming together to create a strong policy of border security and interior enforcement.

We really need the Steve King Anchor Baby bill (that absurdity must grind to a halt, pronto) as well as Trey Gowdy's bill that authorizes state and local law enforcement to engage in enforcing US immigration law passed immediately.
