477 arrests made in year-old Escondido police, federal program

ESCONDIDO — It’s been one year and 477 arrests since Escondido police partnered with immigration enforcement, and the police chief says it’s contributed to a safer community, while activists maintain the program is divisive and unnecessary.
Operation Joint Effort was launched in May 2010 to help identify and arrest criminal illegal immigrants — those who have been previously deported, have a criminal history or are immigration fugitives. Three Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents are based at Escondido police headquarters to assist when a person who is detained cannot produce proper identification or is known to the officer as prior criminal deportee, police said.
