SALEM, Ore. - A new policy in Marion County means foreign-born suspects booked into the jail will be reported to immigration officials.

Immigration and customs enforcement agents say they will review each case and place a hold against illegal and legal immigrants who are accused of serious or violent crimes.

Immigration officials say the goal is to deport illegal residents who are a danger to society.

Within the first 10-days of the policy implementation, 28 foreign-born suspects were reported to immigration officers.

Marion County Sheriff Russ Isham said that, "right now, what we're trying to do is do anything that we can to hold people accountable, regardless of what country you're from, whether you're born here in the united states or from another country."

Critics of the policy are concerned there won't be enough room in the jail if immigration officials place too many people in jail for immigration holds.
