Man Wanted for Homicide Arrested at Calexico Downtown Port

(Monday, June 01, 2009)

Calexico, Calif. - U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers working at the Calexico downtown port over the weekend arrested a fugitive wanted for homicide by the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office, officials announced today.

The arrest occurred on Sunday, May 31, at about 1 p.m., when Jesus Retamoza-Chaidez, a 44-year-old Mexican citizen who legally resides in Salinas, Calif., was detained after he entered the downtown port as a pedestrian and presented a Mexican passport and U.S. visa to the officer. The CBP officer noticed anomalies with the documents presented and escorted Chaidez to the secondary inspection area for further investigation.

During the secondary inspection, officers determined the documents Chaidez presented were in fact fraudulent. A 10-fingerprint scan was administered utilizing the Integrated Automated Fingerprint Identification System which confirmed Chaidez’ true identity. Further checks into law enforcement databases led to the discovery of an outstanding arrest warrant for homicide issued by the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office.

The Calexico Police Department was contacted and confirmed the warrant with the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office. Chaidez was transferred to the custody of the Calexico Police Department and transported to the Imperial County Jail to await extradition to Monterey, Calif.
