Two single-vehicle accidents near Eloy left four people dead Saturday.

Three people died, nine were injured and two fled the scene of a single-vehicle accident that authorities said was connected to illegal immigration.

Fourteen people were riding in a Dodge Durango westbound on Interstate 10 after midnight when U.S. Border Patrol "identified it as a human smuggling vehicle," said Sgt. Harold Sanders, a spokesman for the Department of Public Safety.

That's when DPS tried to stop the vehicle, but the driver lost control of the SUV, Sanders said.

Pinal County sheriff's officers and the Eloy Police Department aided in trying to find the two people, including the driver, who fled the scene. The two were still on the loose late Saturday.

Another single-vehicle accident involved a tanker truck carrying liquid tar, also near Eloy.

Witnesses said the truck began to drift off Interstate 10, crashed through a fence and trees, and overturned. The Valley-based driver died, Sanders said.
