Woman, 2 men indicted in auto theft operation
They're accused of running 'chop shop'out of Morris Twp.

    DAILY RECORD

A 27-year-old woman and two men were indicted Wednesday on multiple charges of running a "chop shop" for stolen cars and motorcycles from an Emmett Avenue home in Morris Township, according to authorities and records.

A Morris County grand jury handed up an indictment that charges brothers Rony Y. Hernandez, 27, and Denis R. Hernandez, 29, with leading an auto theft trafficking network, operating a facility for the sale of stolen automobiles or parts, receiving and dealing in stolen property, possession of altered property, altering vehicle identification numbers and knowingly tampering with public records or information.

Ligia Y. Canelas, whom authorities identified as the wife of Rony Hernandez and the owner of the Emmett Avenue home, was indicted on all the same charges except for the charge of leading an auto theft trafficking network. Records show that Canelas -- who is legally in the United States from San Pedro, Honduras -- took out a $304,000 mortgage to buy the home in February 2004. When arrested in May 2005 with the two brothers, she was employed as a housekeeper.

The indictment centers around May 9, 2005, when detectives went to the house after a Morris County sheriff's officer delivering court papers to a nearby home got a hit on the LOJAC system. The LOJAC signal indicated a reported stolen vehicle was transmitting from the Emmett Avenue property. Authorities said that Canelas gave police permission to check the rear exterior of her property where numerous motor vehicle parts, along with a 1999 Toyota Corolla and 2000 RAV4 reported stolen in Connecticut were found.

The alleged chop shop --where cars were brought, repainted, remodeled or separated -- operated inside a detached garage on the Emmett Avenue tract. Morris County Assistant Prosecutor Lawrence Whipple said that more than $75,000 worth of vehicles and suspected stolen parts were found inside, and police suspect the enterprise may have operated since Canelas bought the house in 2004.

The trio are accused of possessing of the following stolen property: a 1997 Green Nissan Pathfinder, a Toyota Corolla, a silver Toyota RAV4, a blue Suzuki motorcycle, a black and white Suzuki, a gray Yamaha RX6 motorcycle, a gray Honda 954RR motorcycle, and parts that included a Honda Civic dashboard and doors from a Toyota Tacoma.

Whipple said the trio allegedly sold and transported cars and motorcycles and that phone records have been compiled that show communications with places where cars were stolen or stolen car parts were found.

At the time of their arrests in 2005, Rony Hernandez and Canelas both told police through a Spanish interpreter that a person named Daniel Castro of Parsippany used the garage. Canelas told police that Castro was in Delaware, and that he had rented the garage from her for $550 a month since February, but police said at the time they believed Castro was a fictitious person.

Illegal Latinos have one of the highest per capita rates of business start up in the United States. Don't you want them to enjoy a better life?

    -Sarcastically stated of course
I support enforcement and see its lack as bad for the 3rd World as well. Remittances are now mostly spent on consumption not production assets. Join our efforts to Secure America's Borders and End Illegal Immigration by Joining ALIPAC's E-Mail Alerts network (CLICK HERE)
