Illegals leads police on high speed chase
March 11, 2006, 07:45 PM PST
ALICE - Two men are on the loose after leading police on a high speed chase through two counties Saturday. The hot pursuit lasted nearly an hour with speeds reaching more than 100 miles per hour.
The chase started in Corpus Christi headed through Robstown to Banquete, Agua Dulce, eventually ending in Jim Wells County, just east of Alice on County Road 339.
Police were on the tail of the car, thinking a child had been forced into the trunk. But it turns out, the car was packed with illegal immigrants. 6 News talked to a woman who was in the car about her struggle to get this far.
24-year-old Lleraoerlyn said it will be painful to go back home to Honduras . She promised her two daughters; she'd find work and would be sending money back home. All of the men with her had hoped to do the same, they traveled here from El Salvador.
Saturday, Lleraoerlyn said they came across the driver of a Ford Taurus who offered to give them a ride. She said the driver was very nervous, and tense, during the chase and said he was sorry, but was going to pull over and run.
Police said there were a total of 11 illegal immigrants inside the small red Taurus, seven in the front and four in the trunk, there are coke cans, and water bottles." Lleraoerlyn said they'd been traveling for three weeks and are sad to be going back home empty handed.
She said one can only imagine how she feels, having sacrificed so much for her family. Police said they aren't sure if the driver of the car was an illegal immigrant, but said the vehicle was registered in El Paso.

O, that poor thing...to have come so far and 'sacrificed so much' to break our laws and then fail at the last minute. Tsk.
