Illegals Organizers Rethinking May 1 US Boycott
April 20, 2006 11:25 AM EST

By Sher Zieve – Although the organizers for the May Day US national day of illegal immigrants’ and students’ strike and boycott have not canceled the event, illegal aliens are now said to be concerned about losing their jobs if they participate. However, many of the 200 organizations that support the strike and work stoppage are still encouraging it to go forward.

Coordinator of the National Alliance for Human Rights Armando Navarro said: "Our credibility as a community is on the line. We've shown our power politically, but if we can't show it economically we are going to lose it." Some of the boycott organizers, include MEChA, LULAC and Mexica Movement, which all advocate “reconquista” or the “reconquest” of the United States for Mexico or the, previously, mythical land of Aztlan.

On Wednesday Chicago organizer Jorge Mujica backed off of prior illegals organizers’ positions by saying: "There are several calls for boycotts. There are several calls for strikes. We want to make very clear that this committee, this group of 200 organizations, is not calling for a boycott, is not calling for a general strike or work stoppage." Ana Maria Archila, executive director of the Latin American Integration Center, added: "If they [illegals] lost their jobs, there would be nothing we could do."
