Illegals policies a failure: Seton Hill debaters

Illegals policies a failure: Seton Hill debaters

The two men who debated illegal immigration agreed on one thing: It's a tough issue requiring tough choices.

Dan Stein of the Federation for American Immigration, and Enrique Morones, founder of Border Angels, squared off Thursday at Seton Hill University, each declaring that the country requires leadership to solve the problems posed by the presence in the United States of 12 million undocumented workers.

Stein, a Washington lawyer, said governmental "elites" have colluded with business interests to create the problem. He said the promise of the 1986 immigration reform legislation was never fulfilled. He said the tide of undocumented workers flooding across the southern border of the U.S. was unprecedented in scale and was driving down the wages of middle-class Americans.

"This is about greed, greed, greed," he said.

Morones, whose group places food, water and other provisions in the desert for use of migrants headed north, said as many as three people a day die trying to enter the United States. "Two people died today," he said.

He said his group favored a "pathway" to citizenship for illegals in the country. He said the chief reason the undocumented enter the U.S. is to find employment. The second, he said, is to be reunited with family members here. He talked about the deaths, on the journey northward, of a 5-year-old boy and a mother in separate incidents.

"Is that what this country is all about?" he asked.

Some 350 people attended the campus debate. It was the second of two discussions held this year at the Greensburg school on the issue of immigration.

Morones said the poor in Mexico are unable to obtain visas to enter the U.S. legally. He claimed "documented" immigrants commit "10 times" the number of crimes as the undocumented, but he did not cite a source.

In defense of his organization's work, Morones said, "We are not encouraging people to cross (the border). We don't want (people) to die."

The San Diego native lit into Stein's group, saying it was allied with "white separatist" organizations and "hate groups."

Stein did not respond other than to say he would not "dignify" the remarks. The president of FAIR, which boasts a membership of 193,000, said he opposes "amnesty" for illegals and advocated the initial deportation of 100,000 and 500,000 a year thereafter.

"What signal are we sending" by allowing undocumented workers to come in such numbers? he asked. "What does it say about the rule of law."

He returned several times to the theme that the middle class was being squeezed out of high-wage employment by low-wage illegal immigrants. He declared the nation's population would swell to 1 billion people by the end of the century largely fueled by new arrivals.

"We've never had an immigration level like we have today," he said.

Morones cited the support of Sens. Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama and John McCain for "comprehensive immigration reform." A reform bill sponsored by the Republican McCain and Democrat Sen. Edward Kennedy failed to win passage this year. The measure had the support of the Bush administration.

Stein and Morones took questions from the audience. The two men have appeared together at other forums and are represented by the same speakers bureau, said Jodi F. Solomon of Boston.

Note Morones words--"AS MANY AS THREE PEOPLE A DAY DIE TRYING TO ENTER THE UNITED STATES".
He words it so it sounds like that figure is a daily occurance and he doesn't explain the circumstances surrounding the deaths.

U.N. Report Written By American Pro-Immigrant Groups posted by carolinamtwoman:
Between October of 2001 and September of 2007, 1,327 migrants perished crossing the Arizona (US)/Mexico border. Most victims died from dehydration and hyperthermia.
    http://www.alipac.us/ftopict-105916-die ... ing+border

On average 221 die annually attempting to cross the border.
How many of the 221 died because they were unable to keep up so they were abandoned and left to die by the group they were traveling with?

1.) 14 year old girl abandoned and died--group contained other family member(s).
2.) 7 year old boy and his mother abandoned--rescued by border agents.
3.) Women broke her leg and abandoned by her group; a 2nd group passed by and they too left her to die. When the 2nd group was captured by border agents, one man spoke up and told border agents about her. She was rescued by border agents.

About 9125 American citizens die each year at the hands of illegal immigrants.

    Appeal to Mexican President Calderon:
"Amnesty International has documented torture, arbitrary detention,
excessive use of force and the denial of due process," said Cox in a letter
to President Calderon ahead of his official visit Sunday through next
Thursday (Feb. 10-14). "The public security and criminal justice
institutions have too frequently been characterized as abusive, ineffective
    and lacking independence and transparency."

"Distrust and caution are the parents of security."
