Immigrant accused of assaulting federal agent

NEW ORLEANS A man identified by the U-S attorney's office as a Mexican national was charged with running over a federal agent's foot with a car during a law enforcement raid last week.

The 22-year-old man was indicted by a federal grand jury on a charge of assaulting, resisting and impeding a federal officer.

The agent, with U-S Immigration and Customs Enforcement, was identified as Dennis Dedert. The U-S attorney's office didn't disclose the extent of his injury.

According to a complaint filed by Dedert, he and other agents were conducting a raid near Lee Circle in New Orleans when the suspect jumped into a van, put it in reverse and rolled over the agent's foot and struck his arm.

The prosecutor's office says the charge carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.

Officials with Immigration and Customs Enforcement says 40 undocumented immigrants were arrested in the raid, including at least a dozen with violent criminal backgrounds in Central America.
