Immigrant activists demand driver's licenses for undocumented workers

Northern California immigrant leaders demanded driver's licenses for illegal immigrants Wednesday morning, despite a new federal bill that establishes national standards for licenses.

Toting signs and banners covered with sayings such as "Licenses now. Immigrants pay taxes," activists rallying at the Department of Motor Vehicles headquarters building on Broadway in Sacramento called on state lawmakers to approve licenses for the undocumented, despite the new law. They said the licenses should not bear special markings that identify the holder as undocumented.

The group of about 10 people kicked off a campaign last week to picket a different Northern California DMV office each week. During the demonstrations, they hand out fliers asking DMV visitors to boycott the agency for a day in solidarity.

"We are not terrorists. We are workers, we are human beings," said Renee Saucedo, director of the San Francisco Day Labor Program. "We deserve driver's licenses just like everyone else does."

The only way I would approve of a drivers license for illegals would be if they would promise to drive back to Mexico and STAY there.

They can 'tote all the signs and banners they want'. Who CARES! An illegal person does not have the PRIVLEDGE to drive all over the place without a license and car insurance. What IDIOT would think so??!!
