Immigrant Rights Coalition Leaders Gather and Strategize at Summit, Meet with New Congress to Push for Reform

First Major Gathering of the New Year in Nation's Capital

WASHINGTON, Jan. 29 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The following news
advisory was issued today by the Center for Community Change:
    News Advisory:
WHAT: With a renewed focus on passing real comprehensive immigration
reform and following President Bush's State of the Union address, immigrant
rights groups will gather for an action-packed three day "Standing FIRM!"
Summit in Washington, DC. The summit, hosted by the Fair Immigration Reform
Movement (FIRM), will be the first major gathering of immigrant rights
groups in Washington since the start of the new Congress. Major coalition
leaders from California, Illinois, Massachusetts, Colorado and many other
states will come together to finalize a plan to push for immigration reform
that includes a field strategy of more mobilizations, building new
alliances, civic engagement and less focus on fighting back immoral and
unworkable legislation this year. Civil Rights activist Reverend James
Lawson will deliver the keynote address.
The summit comes on the heels of more than 300 diverse organizations
signing onto a proposal outlined in a letter to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi
and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid demanding immigration legislation
that, among many things, ends the tiered approach to earning citizenship
for immigrants, reunites families, ends backlogs and preserves separation
of authority between federal and local law enforcement.
    Details of the
proposal were released to the media and are available at
    http://www.fairimmigration(dot)org. The proposal with organizational
endorsements will be hand delivered on the last day of the summit as part
of a media event on Thursday at 1 p.m. on Capitol Hill.
Interviews with immigrant rights coalition leaders attending the summit
and real stories of immigrants directly affected are available by calling
    Cheryl Aguilar at 202-339-9316.
    WHEN:

Jan. 30, at 2:30 p.m. Summit Opening Plenary

    Jan. 31, at 9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Strategy Sessions & Rev. James Lawson Keynote

Feb. 1, 1 p.m. Post Lobby Visit Press Event
Contact Germonique Jones, 202-339-9331 or Cheryl Aguilar, 202-339-9316,
    for complete agenda of Summit.
    WHERE: Gallaudet University-Kellogg Conference Center
    800 Florida Avenue, NE
    Washington, DC
WHO: Nearly 200 grassroots leaders including leaders of major immigrant
rights coalitions from more than 30 states
The Center for Community Change is a nonprofit, nonpartisan low income
advocacy group that promotes the development of community organizing as a
national force for social and economic justice. FIRM (Fair Immigration
Reform Movement) is a coalition of grassroots community organizations
nationwide, working on behalf of comprehensive immigration reform and
immigrant rights and is convened by Center for Community Change.

I suggest that you call your Representative and Senators this week and remind them that you are firmly against Amnesty/guest worker programs, increasing the number of visas....

These OBLs are walking around pushing their agenda this week, to our Congressmen for the sake of illegal aliens.

Wouldn't it be nice if the anti-illegal immigrant groups could all come together like the immigrant rights groups do. Is it my imagination or does it seem like these groups are frequently getting together and strategizing on how to better push their agenda on Congress?

I was thinking along the same line MW. There are all these 'groups,' and yet when it comes to most citizens, the general public are sick of how our federal government has failed miserably in enforcing our laws and borders. The ACLU is another group that has backed illegal immigration and they seem to have a bottomless pit of money. Big biz is behind the whole nightmare. Money, money, money is the game. It's infuriating how the average day citizens are unable to organize somehow and let their voices also be heard.

What you really mean is get pro-legal immigrant groups together, like the illegal alien rights groups do. Illegal aliens are not immigrants, they are foreign invaders.

This explained what their demands were and when it would be presented to Nancy Pelosi. But it never hurts to remind others of what their up to.

We duped each other. It is good to connect similar stories together anyway.
