CHARLOTTE, N.C. – A committee appointed by Charlotte Mayor Pat McCrory will meet for the first time Monday morning to take an in-depth look at illegal immigration and its impact on the Queen City.

The issue was thrust into the spotlight Tuesday night when Republicans on the Mecklenburg County Commission proposed that the county disallow certain services to illegal immigrants. They also proposed that companies be ineligible for government contracts if they employ illegal immigrants.

Charlotte Mayor Pat McCrory put together a task force to take an in-depth look at illegal immigration and its impact on the Queen City.

The resolution was shot down by the Democratic majority, but it reignited an issue that has been a hot topic lately because of two fatal accidents involving illegal immigrants. Both have been accused of driving drunk.

The man leading the task force, a City Council member from Los Angeles, said the West Coast already has all kinds of data proving that illegal immigrants are draining resources in education, health care and public safety.
