It was a warm summer evening, and 6-year-old Taylor Brooke Shirey was riding her bicycle with her friend on Turner Road, something she often did.
This, however, wasn’t a normal evening.
As Taylor was in front of her aunt’s home Aug. 28, a 16-year-old motorist rounded a curve in a Ford Ranger pickup truck. Police said the teenager tried to stop but was going too fast. He locked up his brakes and the truck ran into the little girl. The teen reportedly fled but was turned in by his father the next day and was arrested on juvenile charges, including leaving the scene of an accident and vehicular homicide.
Taylor was airlifted to Chattanooga, Tenn.’s Erlanger Medical Center, where she died that night.
Unfortunately, hit and runs have been a recurring scene the past three months in Floyd County and surrounding areas. Taylor’s was one of two deaths resulting from hit-and-run accidents in less than a month in Greater Rome.
One woman, Akesia Glenn of Rome, remained in stable condition at Floyd Medical Center on Sunday night, hospital officials said, after her car was hit by a flatbed truck on Martha Berry Boulevard on Sept. 17. The truck driver, Adam Fordum, 74, of 702 S. Broad St., reportedly fled and was apprehended that night. He was arrested on numerous traffic charges, including leaving the scene of an accident, and released on $7,500 bail.
