A new high-tech, low-cost camera system is helping to detect illegal immigrants along the Texas-Mexico border, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

The new system of cameras is catching undocumented immigrants sneaking across private ranches and farms -- groups that would have otherwise gone undetected, according to local landowners.

This sounds like something that actually works and it doesn't cost much. Very cool!

. . . Over the last several years, CBP has replaced the OH-6A with the AS-350 A-Star, made by Eurocopter. The A-Stars are the latest short-range, turbine powered helicopter to perform aerial reconnaissance missions, and are equipped with EO/IR sensors and video downlink capabilities.

Texas now has more than 100 air assets patrolling the border, as well as the National Security Operations Center in Corpus Christi, operating P-3 and Unmanned Aircraft Systems. In the first half of fiscal year 2011, air assets in Texas accounted for almost $1 million in seizures and more than 12,000 apprehensions. . .

Absolutely. Someone just needs to put their heads together and come up with sensible, cost effective solutions. I've thought that portable observation towers might be an answer, because they could be moved to whatever areas turn out to be the latest smuggling trails.

Exactly and they will find a reason why it can't work

The state is doing it
so it is more likely to get done and work
than if the feds were doing it.
