04/02/2007 --
Immigrants arriving in the UK will have to pass tests on English language and culture to earn permanent residency in moves that take effect today.

The Government hopes that the exams will boost new arrivals' ability to contribute to the economy, better their job prospects and help them integrate.

Immigration Minister Liam Byrne said: "It is essential that migrants wishing to live in the UK permanently recognise that there are responsibilities that go with this.

"Having a good grasp of English is essential in order for them to play a full role in society and properly integrate into our communities.

"It is a sign of our success that the UK's work in this area has attracted considerable interest in other countries.

"Australia, for example, has recently launched a public consultation to gather views on the possible introduction of a similar system there."

:: Six regional directors have been appointed to the new Border and Immigration Agency (BIA), which goes live today, the Home Office has announced.

Officers will be stationed at all ports with uniformed immigration officers and new signs and more staff to enforce immigration rules.
