Police: Illegal pot a growing problem in Michigan

Lansing -- Law enforcement officials say Mexican drug traffickers are expanding from California into Michigan.

They have discovered two apparent Mexican marijuana growing operations on state land in northern Michigan within the past year.

State police Detective 1st Lt. David Peltomaa is the coordinator for Operation HEMP, the state's marijuana eradication program. He tells the Lansing State Journal for a story Monday that Mexican traffickers may be attracted to Michigan because it has wooded areas where growing can go undetected.

Mike Yasenchak is the resident agent in charge of central, western and upper Michigan for the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration. He says the use of state and federal wooded land to grow marijuana illegally has risen sharply in the state.
