RALEIGH, N.C. -- An immigration hearing for North Carolina State basketball player Gavin Grant _ in a case that could ultimately end in his deportation to Jamaica _ was postponed Tuesday until September, a federal spokeswoman said.

Federal officials contend Grant, 21, illegally came to the United States from Jamaica 12 years ago. An immigration court was to hold a preliminary hearing in the case on Tuesday in Atlanta.

Instead, the hearing was rescheduled for Sept. 21, said Elaine Komis, a spokeswoman for the Executive Office for Immigration Review, an agency of the U.S. Justice Department that runs the country's immigration courts.

It's at least the second time the hearing has been postponed.

A hearing into the merits of Grant's arguments for staying in the United States, including witnesses testifying on his behalf, will be held sometime after the preliminary hearing, Komis said.

Grant's lawyer, Anna Baird Choi, did not return a call seeking comment.

The accusations against Grant, a rising junior, could ultimately result in his deportation. He could also leave the U.S. voluntarily and then apply to return, or appeal to stay.

Grant, who's married to his high school sweetheart, attended St. Raymond's High School in New York. He wants to become a permanent resident of the U.S. and continue playing basketball and attending N.C State.

The athletic 6-foot-7 swingman averaged 8.3 points last season and was second on the team in rebounds, averaging 4.7 per game.

I'm really starting to not like this. Any other illegal would have been long gone.

This case has been going on since last October.....
