WAUKESHA - Questions over whether illegal immigration is a state or federal issue are heating up the race for state attorney general.
Waukesha County District Attorney Paul Bucher, a Republican, said Wednesday he would like to take advantage of a "tool" that allows local enforcement agencies to supplement Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in the deportation process of illegal aliens who have committed felonies.
But a spokesman from Democratic Attorney General Peg Lautenschlager’s campaign office said Lautenschlager feels illegal immigration is a federal issue.
"That is not something we deal with," said Greg Leifer, Lautenschlager’s campaign manager. "She has said that on the record."
