Greenbelt, Md. (AP) - A Potomac immigration lawyer was sentenced Thursday to six years and six months in prison for immigration fraud.

Maqsood Mir was convicted in April of filing false immigration documents that allowed illegal aliens to enter the United States or remain in the country.

Mir was also ordered to serve three years of supervised release and pay a $25,000 fine. His law firm, Mir Law Associates, was fined $200,000.

Prosecutors say Mir and Herndon-Virginia businessman Mohammad Bajwa took advantage of an immigrant visa program administered by the Labor Department. Prosecutors say the pair falsified applications for the program, making it appear that the aliens were sponsored by US employers. However, most of the employers knew nothing about the aliens.

Bajwa is scheduled to be sentenced on October seventh.
