    Associated Press

PHOENIX – Several people were arrested after a rally in a Phoenix intersection to protest immigration policies of Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio.

The protesters include many students from Trevor Browne High School and other area high schools and colleges.

They rallied Tuesday afternoon in the intersection of 75th Avenue and Cheery Lynn Street, forcing the closures of 75th Avenue in both directions.

Phoenix police say the protest was illegal because participants blocked the road.

The Arizona Republic says the protest started on a street corner but moved into the street by 3:15 p.m.

Police say the protesters were told to leave by 5:30 p.m. or risk being arrested and several were. However, there was no immediate information on how many were taken into custody.

Students protest against Arpaio outside Phoenix high school
    by KTAR.com (March 20th, 2012 @ 6:26pm)

A student protest against Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio outside of Trevor Browne High School lasted more than three hours and at one point closed 75th Ave. north and south from Thomas to Campbell.

Chants of "Undocumented!, Unafraid!" could be heard by the crowd of more than 100.

Students were mainly in attendance with a few adults as well. The students running the protest and leading the different chants.

The protesters were also chanting directly to the sheriff in saying, "Arpaio we're here, we're undocumented and have no fear."

The protest is in response to Arpaio and his stance on immigration enforcement.

One of students on the megaphone could be heard saying, "We are not scared of Arpaio, come and meet us. We want to meet you."

Police informed the protesters they were illegally blocking the street. According to one, they believe a statement needs to be made.

"We're going to ask them all to leave the roadway and those who don't will be arrested," said Phoenix police officer James Holmes. "Anyone 18 or over who is arrested will go to the Fourth Avenue Jail and will be processed for breaking the law. Anyone under the age of 18 will go to the juvenile detention center."

Many of the protestors said they do not fear jail time.

"We worry every day and it's time for us to use that same fear we have for the love of our families and say, 'We're not going to be afraid anymore,'" one protester told KNPX- TV.

In total, five arrests were made.

Other chants that could be heard were; "Arpaio we're here, we're undocumented and we have no fear;" "We're fired up. Can't take no more;" "Up, up with education; down, down with deportation;" "Arpaio we're here. Our community has no fear;" and "No justice, no peace. No racist police."

Undocumented and unafraid to break more laws to demand their way. And do you think their demands and lawlessness would increase or decrease if we were to reward them with what they want?

That is the problem, they are not afraid. Start deporting every single one of these arrogant bold kids who feel they deserve the world on a silver platter.

Under the current administration they know they have nothing to worry about, if anything they feel more emboldened.

Police arrested six demonstrators, including two minors, at a student-led rally to protest Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s immigration policies, the local press reported.

The protesters included students from Trevor Browne High School and other area high schools and colleges.

They rallied Tuesday in the intersection of 75th Avenue and Cheery Lynn Street, forcing police to close 75th Avenue in both directions.

"Arpaio is terrorizing our community and we're tired of it," 16-year-old Jackie Sanchez, who was seated around a protest banner laid out in the street, told the Arizona Republic. "The only power [Arpaio] has is fear. That's over."

During the four-hour rally protesters chanted “undocumented and unafraid” and slogans in support of the DREAM Act.

The demonstration began on a street corner but moved into the street by 3:15 p.m. Phoenix police say the protest was illegal because participants blocked the road.

The roughly 150 protesters were met by some 100 police officers, according to the Arizona Republic.

“Our job is to keep it peaceful and legal,” Phoenix police spokesman James Holmes told the Arizona Republic.

Holmes said the protesters were not physically aggressive.

Police say the protesters were told to leave by 5:30 p.m. A line of officers approached the protesters in the road and started taking some into custody one by one.
