Immigration rallies to put foes face to face

Immigration rallies to put foes face to face

    DEVELOPMENTS
Revised bill: Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer signs a bill revising the state’s new immigration law. Changes include strengthened restrictions against using race or ethnicity as the basis for immigration-status questioning by police.

Boycott push: A coalition called Boycott Arizona announces its formation, and a congressman calls for Major League Baseball to move the 2011 All-Star Game out of Phoenix.

Opinions from both sides of the debate about Arizona’s new immigration law will be manifested today in San Diego and across the country.

Nationally, as many as 100,000 people who oppose the law could gather in Los Angeles. May Day demonstrations with an anti-Arizona flavor also are planned in Chicago, Houston, Minneapolis and elsewhere.

In San Diego, a coalition of organizations will gather in Chicano Park at 11 a.m. to express displeasure with the law, which requires local police to question people about their immigration status if they have reason to suspect a person is in the country illegally. Participants will march to the federal building in downtown San Diego.

There they will encounter the San Diego Pro-America Rally, which will go from noon to 2 p.m. The group wants California to enact a version of the Arizona law to “stem the tide of Mexican drug cartel violence and drug and human smuggling.â€
