CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP)— Protesters arrested at an immigration rally in Charlotte will not face deportation.

Mecklenburg County jail officials say 10 of the 15 people arrested Tuesday are in the United States illegally.

But sheriff's spokeswoman Julia Rush said Immigration and Customs Enforcement told authorities Wednesday not to put detainers on the protesters. Detainers are used to hold people while immigration officials decide on deportation.

The Obama administration said last month people without criminal records who were students, or where brought to the United States as children or who have long family ties to the country would be released from jail and given work permits. None of the 15 had criminal records.

Nearly 200 people took part in a rally at Central Piedmont Community College to protest policies against undocumented immigrants.
