Immigration Reform Advocates Rally in Lower Manhattan

NEW YORK, NY December 10, 2009 —

As President Obama formally accepted his Nobel Peace Prize in Norway on International Human Rights Day today, immigration advocates rallied in Lower Manhattan to say the president hasn't kept his promises for immigration reform.

Sister Elizabeth Butler emigrated to the U.S. from Ireland in 1948, when she was 16 years old. She says she's shocked at how much easier it was to become a citizen then compared to the hardship today's immigrants face: "It's so unfair with the short-sightedness of the people today, and all they can see, or think about, is getting rid of them because they want them out of this country if they don't have a greencard.

As Congress continues to craft immigration reform legislation, protestors stood outside the Varick Street Federal Detention Center to call for an end to immigration raids and an easier path to citizenship for the some 12 million undocumented immigrants in the U.S.
