Immigration Reform is Now OK to Talk About
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Commentary by Donald A. Collins
    April 20, 2005

Ok, American Citizens, you now have permission to talk out loud about something which has been often stuck in your craw at cocktail parties or anywhere else when the subject of immigration reform arose.

I know, because, despite the demographic and economic and cultural truths of excess immigration long known to me, I have often felt constrained in social situations when the topic of immigration came up, not to join heartily in the debate, which usually started with flimsy pronouncements like, “Oh, you want to pull up the ladder, or “Well, we are all immigrants or “Well, they do jobs Americans won’t do. Failing to quiet debate with these guilt trip laden pronouncements, these open border advocates inevitably resort to their main method of attack by calling us dissenters “racists or “xenophobes.

So for decades those aliens from overseas who wanted to break the law by coming here illegally or overstaying legal visas, or using their babies born here to non native mothers (and hence under our ridiculous current law becoming automatic citizens) as an anchor for bringing in the entire family from overseas, frequently including elderly parents who go on Social Security, got away with these illegal or questionable entries. Why? Because they were ably abetted by the real racists, the ethnic lobbies.

There has been and continues to be no shortage of big salty tears generated by the ethnic lobbies, who to date have gotten huge support from some foundations, including the Ford Foundation, but even more from large corporate donors, who happily encouraged these ethnic self appointed open border lobbies be their stalking horses for the main corporate agenda, namely bringing in as much cheap labor as possible.

These cheap labor imports have conjoined with the well publicized phenomenon of “outsourcing of good American jobs to Asia, thus creating a rip tide of job losses which finally has gotten the attention of enough average Americans to be perceived as dangerous and unfair and worth screaming about.

But screaming has largely proved totally inadequate, even when the elected elites in Congress and the White House knew all along that over 80% of all Americans, including a large percentage of ethnic minority American citizens, wanted the laws fixed and the numbers reduced, not only of illegal immigrants, but also legal immigrants who come here at nearly 800,000 per year, many on specious special work visas, again engineered by corporations who have bought the fealty of Congress.

So why now, all of a sudden, can we talk freely about the inequity of this current situation? Several reasons, including the fear of more and more job losses for American workers. But since April first and the lead up in the media to the event for the so called “Minute Men project (MMP) has with powerful symbolism highlighted the most egregious violations on our Southern borders. The arrival of these Minute Men, some 1,500 volunteer citizens, on the long, largely unprotected border of Arizona, for the purpose of reporting illegal aliens sightings to the border patrol claimed huge national media coverage and widespread sympathy from most citizens. Dubbed “vigilantes by both Mexican President Fox and President Bush, it soon became obvious that in trying to cover just 40 miles of that border, the symbolism of citizen action because of our government’s abject failure to uphold our Constitution to “defend and protect American citizen rights, could not be dismissed by or run over by even the most arrogant and powerful of our elected leaders.

One seasoned immigration reform observer with whom I recently corresponded put it perfectly.

“By any measure, American citizens have now reached a point of demanding action. This is true especially of Middle Class voters, who perhaps as recently as a year ago felt uncomfortable talking about reforming immigration. Many now talk openly about reductions. It has been true for years that illegal immigration has shaped the debate for years, but this flow of 4000 illegal aliens crossing our borders daily, has literally given those reticent voices permission to question legal limits as well.

The price of not taking action has simply gotten ridiculously high. The resources to handle perhaps as many as three (3) times as many more people in the US by mid Century, or almost one billion people, many of the new comers uneducated and un-socialized or quite possibly terrorists, simply won’t do. I predict those present elected officials will continue to spurn this wave of empowerment at the cost of their political careers.

As one of my late revered relatives liked to opine, “There is nothing so beautiful as the sight of an intellectual sunrise, even in this case one which was forced upon an unwilling Congress. The leadership of a few there such as Tom Tancredo will no doubt shortly reach a critical mass of members who can be persuaded that if enough voters are angry they may lose their jobs, despite the big money boys from industry who keep urging leniency on immigration. We shall see.

Two current tests are right now before the US Senate: The REAL ID act, which protects against terrorist infiltration, and the AgJobs bill (S.359). As immigration reform expert, Roy Beck, notes about S.359, “Agricultural experts estimate this amnesty for illegal aliens working in some kind of ag job will add around 3 million people to this country’s permanent population. That would be 3 million people (illegal aliens plus their relatives) given permanent residency and a path to U.S. citizenship – a massive amnesty making these millions of low-paid foreign workers and their families eligible for full taxpayer subsidies. You know, the schools and other public facilities your taxes go for. How long before this kind of travesty stops? Not long if we keep the heat on.

    Well, we are all immigrants

Right... until we become citizens, and if anyone cared to look, most of us are citizens, and we don't want illegal aliens rocking and rolling all over this country. Particularly with pistolas which have managed to kill a whole bunch of poeple in all the areas they have been in.

And if we are going to excuse that crimanal behaviour, we need to be just in our forgiveness.. and forgive everyone who was involved in criminal acivity in the United States.

good post Darlene.. and thank 'ou.
