(CBS) HOLLYWOOD, Calif. A crowd estimated by police to total about 1,000 persons, chanting in favor of humane treatment for illegal immigrants, began marching up Hollywood Boulevard Sunday, carrying U.S. and Mexican flags.

The crowd is chanting the traditional "si, se puede" call, translating to "yes, it can be done."

Los Angeles Police deputy chief Richard Roupoli said a few counter-protesters have been spotted near the crowd, but there have been no confrontations. Roupoli said the march has been peaceful.

The marchers had gathered at the corner of Hollywood Boulevard and Vine Street, and after noon started marching west about a mile to Highland Avenue. They plan to rally and hear speeches on Hollywood between Highland and Orange avenues.

Los Angeles Police, mindful of pictures of journalists being assaulted by police officers at a similar rally last month in MacArthur Park, have set up designated news media zones in the area.

Sunday's march comes a day after a tense situation between dueling rallies was diffused by police at Leimert Park. More than 500 protestors on both sides of the issue were kept apart by a line of police on Crenshaw Boulevard, and five persons were arrested.

15,000 Expected At Sunday's Pro-Immigration March

15,000 Expected At Sunday's Pro-Immigration March

VIDEO: Watch The Latest News
(CBS) HOLLYWOOD, Calif. More than 15,000 people are expected march in Hollywood on Sunday, demanding full legalization and recognition of immigrant work. The pro-immigration march was created in anticipation of Tuesday's Senate debate on immigration reform.

"There is a need for immigrants to be recognized for their work and our main concern is the more than 12 million workers here illegally," said Raul Murillo, executive director of the Los Angeles chapter of Hermandad Mexicana Nacional.

"We want recognition for their work and legalization now. We're asking for the legalization for 12 million workers giving their lives to the United States."

The "Full Rights For Immigrants March and Rally" will begin at the intersection of Hollywood Boulevard from Vine Street at noon and head west to the front of the Kodak Theatre at Highland Avenue.

A rally is expected to begin between 1 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. at the end of the march. The event will feature Spanish entertainment, including performances by well-known "Banda" queen Jenny Rivera, El Puma de Sinaloa and the rap duo AKWID.

"We are asking Congress and the Senate to move forward and legislate immigration reform," Murillo said.

A plan to change immigration stalled on the Senate floor earlier in June. However, this proposal includes tougher security measures that are designed to gain conservative support. The bill includes a mandated $4.4 billion for spending on border security and jail time for foreigners who overstay their visas, among other crackdowns on illegal immigration.

The proposed bill's fate remains unclear, however, despite revisions and President Bush's push to have the measure approved.

ICE agents should be assisting LAPD.

This annoys me. The ongoing attempts to influence public thought by words, very Orwellian 1984ish. No one is marching for "Immigrant Rights" as stated by this so-called writer, its actually "Illegal Alien Rights!"
