Border Patrol finds 818 pounds of pot and sex offender

In a four-day period, U.S. Border Patrol agents arrested one man charged with a sex crime and seized 818 pounds of marijuana and a cache of suspected drug cash totaling $155,000.
On Friday, agents at the checkpoint on Interstate 10 west of Las Cruces seized the cash from a vehicle after a canine led agents to it, according to a Border Patrol news release.
On Sunday, agents in Deming arrested 34-year-old Joel Gongora-Arana from Yucatan, Mexico, when he tried to enter the United States illegally near Columbus. He is wanted on a sex crime in Santa Rosa, Calif. He is awaiting extradition to that state.
Also on Sunday, agents in Lordsburg stopped several trucks crossing the border from Mexico, and found marijuana. The total weight was 818 pounds, and was valued at $654,512.
