Iowa-Business suffering in Postville following raid

Business suffering in Postville following raid

POSTVILLE, Iowa (AP) -- Most of the business owners in Postville have reported diminishing sales since federal agents arrested hundreds of workers in an immigration raid on the Agriprocessors meat-processing plant in May.

Though they expressed confidence they can survive as long as Agriprocessors stays open, those who cater to the town's Hispanic population report a grimmer outlook.

With no end in sight to shrinking sales, some expect to close in the coming weeks.

At the Sabor Latino grocery store and restaurant, five workers have been laid off. The owner told staff a few weeks ago he might close the grocery store business does not improve. But the restaurant continues to do well because many of Postville's non-Hispanic residents eat there.

Just around the corner at El Vaquero, a downtown clothing shop, the doors sometimes remain locked even during normal business hours. Signs in the display window advertise a 50 percent discount on all merchandise, and 30 percent off all 14-karat gold jewelry.

Cesar Jochola, the owner of Restaurante Rinconcito Guatelmateco, say he's seen his sales drop 75 percent. But Jochola intends to do everything he can to stay in Postville.

His family escaped gang violence in Los Angeles a few years ago, and they consider Postville an ideal place to raise children. They plan to close the restaurant to make ends meet.

Jochola or his wife plan to look for a full-time job elsewhere to supplement income earned from their grocery store.

"We can't leave this town," Jochola said. "The education for our children is very good. You don't see gangs in the school, and the teachers are very good."

Ya, that happens. That's what happens when you cater everything to any group of people and especially illegal ones. SUFFER.....SUFFER BIG TIME.......then maybe NEXT time you won't sell your citizens out for a cheap temp fix. Maybe NEXT time you'll learn the difference between citizens and passers by. Maybe next time you'll think long term and not short term. Rule one......never bite the hand that feeds you.....1 bird in the hand is worth 2 in the bush......you gambled and you lost. Good riddance.

Better learn to have a more diverse menu.....you aren't catering to Latinos anymore. This is GERMAN country. WHITE country. European AREA. English would be strongly suggested. Funny.....no-one races to school districts where Latinos are the majority. Get a connection yet Cesar?

That isn't unique to this area. It's the nature of business. Did we mourn bootleggers when prohibition was repealed?

I guess he's not a fan of Villaraigosa, huh? Why would he close the restaurant if it's thriving, when the grocery store is the one losing business? This is what happens when you cater to ONE segment of the population. Others don't feel welcome and will not patronize you. They also have long memories.

You ain't had a taco or a burrito till you've had it Nebraska style. They adapted and tried to INCLUDE the new immigrants. Name me one Mexican restaurant who can do a decent hot dog, apple pie or stew. any OTHER dish to accomodate ANY other ethnic group. They can't and they don't........not even for ulcer customers or anyone else.

I expect to see mergers like a restaurant moving into a down sized food market.
I support enforcement and see its lack as bad for the 3rd World as well. Remittances are now mostly spent on consumption not production assets. Join our efforts to Secure America's Borders and End Illegal Immigration by Joining ALIPAC's E-Mail Alerts network (CLICK HERE)

I thought that Agriprocessors treated their workers horribly.......lousy pay, no overtime pay, sometimes no pay at all? If that were the case, how were any of them able to afford to buy gold jewelry at this place?

Also, I thought that the raid has left them all impoverished unable to buy and pay for the necessities? How is it that they will be able to buy gold jewelry now even if it is at a discount?
