E-verify programme opposed by meat industry groups
E-verify programme opposed by meat industry groups
Meat industry groups are opposing the Secure America through Verification Enforcement (SAVE) Act that would effect the programme aimed at identifying illegal workers.
Six meat industry groups sent a letter to House and Senate bill sponsors Rep. Heath Shuler (D-N.C.) and Sen. Mark Pryor (D-Ark.), opposing the Secure America through Verification Enforcement (SAVE) Act that, if secured, would make a number of changes to the current Basic Pilot/E-Verify programme aimed at identifying illegal workers.
The letter was signed by the American Meat Institute, National Cattleman’s Beef Association, National Chicken Council, National Meat Association, National Pork Producers Council and National Turkey Federation.
The letter stated that, while the groups favour more effective immigration enforcement and have supported the Basic Pilot/E-Verify program, they oppose, “the draconian measures of the SAVE Act that will prove incapable of effective implementation, severely harm US businesses, and fail to address the problem of document fraud that defeats the current employments verification system.â€Join our efforts to Secure America's Borders and End Illegal Immigration by Joining ALIPAC's E-Mail Alerts network (CLICK HERE)

Watched video of kicking cows,etc-rumored the are illegal ,quickly fired -if you have illegal work force in meat packing ,corners can be cut, safety standards and sick animals will not be reported. If an employer is injured they tell them they found drugs in thier blood and should go away quietly. It is not just the lower wages -it is the standards, etc they are saving money on.

All the modern safety standards and procedures we have in our meat, food-packing industry mean nothing when the work force is comprised of non-english speaking adults with little or no education at all (average total years of education for Mexican adults=6 years, Guatemalans=3.5years, etc.)and have no knowledge of even basic standards for food-handling, personal hygiene etc. If they can't read at all...how are safety standards being taught and why the h...l would these companies hire them anyway ...we know the answer...greed and reckless disregard for the implementation of the safety standards.

So this is what our food industry has come too. Just think about the future. When the borders are opened further to truck traffic food processors will be able to go into Mexico, process our food and ship it back to the U.S.
The food processing industry is still a industry that has yet to globalize. Mexico's close proximity coupled with cheap wages and regulatory policies will be a real threat in the future to our food supply. Open the borders to easily transport goods, build better hwys to accomodate the extra traffic and I believe our food processors will indeed leave to cheaper costs and greater profits. It is just a matter of time. IMHO
It has been stated by trucking industry leaders that a company can hire 2 drivers for the price of 1 American driver. Add to that, the cost of diesel in Mexico. 250 gallons put on at the Mexican border can go along ways up into our country. Talk about unfair advantage.
Where will your potato chips, pre-cut meat, canned veggies, and soda pop come from in the future?

It's already happening....ethnic grocery stores import some very, very bad stuff that goes uninspected and unregulated. Remember last week the recall of the Mexican candies full of lead? They were being sold in bodegas and Hispanic grocery stores all over the U.S. In NYC, there's a disgusting problem with contraband banned meats that are being shipped in by African immigrants. Gross.

I was refering to our American name brands. Frito-Lay, Coke, Pepsi, Del Monte, Libby's, General Mills, Betty Crocker and such.
Will they be processed in Mexico and shipped north? Think about the good paying jobs that would be affected.
