IRS Can Identify Illegal Immigrants through Tax Returns

Some information sharing between government agencies could help mend the nation's broken immigration policy.

The IRS can identify illegal immigrants when they file their taxes.

"The number on the W-2 form, the fake or stolen Social Security number, doesn't match the number on the tax return," says Mark Krikorian with the Center for Immigration Studies.

He says many illegal workers are getting millions of dollars in tax refunds. "The main reason that illegals actually do the filing is to get refunds."

The Treasury Department paid illegal immigrant workers about $300 million in tax refunds.

They're staying clear of the immigration administration because the IRS and the Social Security Administration aren't authorized to pass on information on their status.

"The problem here, though, isn't IRS bureaucrats. The IRS needs to be authorized by Congress or by the administration - this is one of the things they're supposed to do."
