After months of hard work the Illinois DREAM Act is scheduled to be voted on in the Illinois Senate tomorrow! Please Join HS News and Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights to Spread the Word!

This bill has the power to make a real difference in the lives undocumented young people throughout Illinois and moves the immigration debate toward.

Urgent: Ask your Senator to vote Yes on the Illinois DREAM Act!

    The Illinois DREAM Act provides:

Good information. DREAM youths too often get incorrect information from high school counselors and college admissions officers regarding their college options. This bill would encourage these counselors and officers receive regular training regarding educational opportunities for immigrant youths. Having accurate information would give DREAM youths the hope they need to continue their educations and help reduce the rates of high school dropouts.

Education Access. Many qualified DREAM students do not have the financial resources to pursue college—and as a result their talents are wasted. An estimated 65% of DREAM youths come from households that earn below 200% of the poverty line. The Illinois DREAM Act would establish a privately-funded Illinois DREAM Fund, administered by a volunteer state commission, to make scholarships available to undocumented students at no cost to taxpayers. The bill would also open up college savings programs and prepaid tuition programs to all Illinois residents, so that the families of DREAM students will be better able to pay for tuition. Note one penny comes from tax dollars.

Illinois DREAM Commission. In addition to administering and fundraising for the Illinois DREAM Fund, this commission would monitor implementation of other parts of this law and research the needs of DREAM youths as they make their way through college.
Tell Your Senator to Support the Illinois DREAM Act and other pro-immigrant legislation!

On Saturday at our New Americans Rally, Illinois Senate President Cullerton committed to passing this bill but we need to do our part.
Contact your Senator and ask them to support the Illinois DREAM Act and then ask your friends to do the same!

Illinois must understand U.S. lawmakers ceased the Dream Act not many months ago, and a State do not have a legal right to grant citizenship to undocumented aliens. Only lawmakers can legislate and enact such laws.

Student Immigration Bill Dies in U.S. Senate:

    September 21, 2010

    BY CINDY CARCAMO

An act that would have given U.S. residency to certain students and military hopefuls who are in the country illegally died today in the Senate.

Senators voted 56 to 43 for the bill, falling short of the 60 votes needed to bring it to the floor.

How do Illinois think the State can enact immigration laws that was voted down by U.S. lawmakers?

UPDATE: Illinois DREAM Act unanimously passes Senate Exec Committee

UPDATE: ICIRR's Joshua Hoyt updated us in the comment section below that the current form of the DREAM Act does not include driver's certificates and will require no taxpayer funding.

Remember the YouTube IR ran over the weekend about House Speaker Mike Madigan and Senate President John Cullerton endorsing a state DREAM Act for the children of illegal immigrants?

The DREAM Act unanimously passed the Senate Executive Committee on Tuesday night, and Senator Cullerton told the committee the bill would pass the Senate and would pass the House. In other words, it's a done deal, as we suspected after seeing the rally Cullerton and Madigan attended Sunday.

While they are at expanding education opportunities for these college age students, why not open the way for kids in Latino community failing schools to have a chance to learn to read and write before they attempt to get into college?
Why aren't all of the Latino caucus enthusiastic about supporting the school choice bill being sponsored by State Senator Matt Murphy (R-Palatine)? SB 1932 is two votes short of passing the Senate. Now's the time to open the system up for school choice, especially in Chicago's failing schools. But back to the DREAM Act ...

Here's three things the DREAM Act contains via the Daily Illini, and one very controversial segment of the bill -- issuing drivers' certificates to students in the program -- is included:

First, it will encourage high school counselors to provide resources to undocumented students. The regular training will help counselors understand education opportunities available for immigrant youths. Secondly, the bill will create a privately-funded scholarship, which undocumented students can access, That way, immigrant youths coming from households below the poverty line can have an opportunity to pay for tuition. Lastly, the bill will provide driving certification to undocumented students so they can have permit and an identification card, reducing the number of uninsured drivers.

States can't enforce federal immigration laws, but can pass they're own laws for the benefit of illegals! Where's the GOP? They're layin' down with they're bellies up on everything and the problem is just getting worse! What the hell are they afraid of? Obama? give me a break!

State Senate OKs Dream Act for immigrants’ kids

    May 4, 2011 10:47PM

SPRINGFIELD — Undocumented college students would gain new access to privately funded scholarships under legislation that passed the Senate on Wednesday with support from immigration-rights groups.

The Illinois Dream Act, which passed 45-11 and now moves to the House, would establish a state commission to dole out privately funded scholarships to as many as 95,000 children of undocumented immigrants. No taxpayer dollars would be used.

The measure, sponsored by Senate President John Cullerton (D-Chicago), also would allow undocumented immigrants ages 18 to 29 with taxpayer-identification cards to invest in the state’s Bright Start and College Illinois programs.

“We are simply saying they should be treated as other children are who want to go to college,â€
