Jerome Corsi, anti-Obama author, detained in Kenya

A leading American neo-conservative author has been detained by immigration authorities in Kenya as he tried to launch a book smearing Barack Obama.

Jerome Corsi, of Swift Boat Veterans for Truth fame, was this morning being held after failing to reckon with Obamamania.

He had been planning to launch his book, entitled The Obama Nation Leftist Politics and the Cult of Personality, before travelling to one of Nairobi’s slums to donate money to the Senator’s half-brother George, who was found living in squalid conditions two months ago.

But officers swooped hours after Dr Corsi was described as "author of a smear crusade" by local newspapers.

Immigration officials claim he had been detained because he did not have a work permit, however one of Dr Corsi's assistants said he was "just answering some questions".

"We have been given water and are very comfortable," the assistant said.

Journalists were turned away from the hotel suite where the launch was due to be held. "He shouldn’t have had anything in the paper this morning," said one. "That was his mistake. He should have kept it secret."

Dr Corsi said he had a $1,000 cheque for George Obama, seen as part of a stunt to suggest that the senator was not taking care of his Kenyan-based relative.

A source at Nyayo House, where Dr Corsi was being held, said the author had been detained for references made to Raila Odinga, the Kenyan prime minister, and allegations that his Muslim supporters had engaged in a wave of violence that rocked the country after December’s disputed elections.

The allegations are not taken seriously in Kenya, were Mr Odinga is widely seen to have been cheated out of a legitimate victory.

Carlos Maluta, a senior immigration official in charge of investigations, said Dr Corsi did not have a work permit. "We still haven’t decided what to do with him," he told The Associated Press.

In the promotional literature for his book, Dr Corsi promised to reveal sinister links between Kenyan politicians and Mr Obama.

"Dr Corsi will also expose details of deep secret ties between US Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama and a section of Kenya government leaders, their connection to certain sectoral groups in Kenya and subsequent plot to be executed in Kenya should Senator Obama win the American presidency," it said.

Mr Obama, whose father was a well-known Kenyan economist, is hugely popular across Africa.

In Kenya, his meteoric rise and subsequent fame have won him support across traditional tribal boundaries and left many ordinary people wondering why American right-wingers would wish him ill.

Hawkers in the city centre are selling badges and T-shirts bearing Obama’s image, and every twist of the US election campaign is being followed on television and radio.

Isn't Carlos a rather unusual name for a Kenyan?

Since when do writers need work permits while traveling to foreign countries?

And what does he mean, they have not decided "what to do with" Dr. Corsi? I believe there are protocols concerning Americans detained by foreign governments?

Obama's crew will not want Dr Corsi to stay in Kenya. I am sure when he was to deliver the check to Obama's brother he was going to get any information regarding the senators birth. If he was there to sell his book and didn't have a work visa, he may have wanted to be detained and or deported for the press coverage.

We should help him get that coverage.

ALIPAC NOTE: We call on all Americans to immediately contact their Congressional representatives and the US Department of State to call for the immediate release and return of Dr. Corsi. Dr. Jerry Corsi is also the author of "Late Great United States" which is the book that broke the news of the behind the scenes attempt to create a 'North American Union' in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

You would think that "our" President and Senator MCain would want to secure the freedom of a United States Citizen but he did expose the N.A.U. that they both support so he may be there for a very long time!

If he planned it so he would be detained for press coverage, I would call it brilliant stategy to make some noise especially with the debate being televised tonight!

It's the lead story on Drudge report and the associated press picked up on it.

    Jerome Corsi
NAIROBI, Kenya — The American author of a best-selling book attacking Barack Obama as unfit for the presidency was being deported from Kenya on Tuesday, a criminal investigations official said.
Jerome Corsi, who wrote "The Obama Nation: Leftist Politics and the Cult of Personality," was picked up by police Tuesday for not having a work permit, said Carlos Maluta, a senior immigration official in charge of investigations.

He was briefly detained at immigration headquarters before being brought to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport for deportation, said Joseph Mumira, head of criminal investigations at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.

It was not immediately clear when he would fly out. A message left on Corsi's mobile phone was not returned.

Obama spokesman Bill Burton said the campaign had no comment.

Corsi had been scheduled to launch his book Tuesday in Kenya, where the Democratic U.S. presidential candidate is wildly popular. Obama's late father, whom he barely knew, was a Kenyan economist and the candidate is considered by many Kenyans as a native son. Minibuses are emblazoned with his picture and vendors sell T-shirts bearing his image.

Jerome Corsi Obama was born in Hawaii, where he spent most of his childhood raised by his mother, a white American from Kansas.

Corsi's book claims the Illinois senator is a dangerous, radical candidate for president and includes innuendoes and false rumors — that he was raised a Muslim and attended a radical black church.

Obama is a Christian who attended Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago, and his campaign picks apart the book's claims on the Obama campaign's rumor-fighting Web site, FightTheSmears.com.

According to a statement announcing Corsi's visit, he arrived last week at the invitation of Christian missionaries concerned about the rise of Islam. Corsi was planning to file daily dispatches all week, the statement said.

Obama's Kenyan uncle, Said Obama, said he was unaware of Corsi's detention and had no comment. A government spokesman did not return calls for comment.
