Jewish leaders stop short of boycott on Agriprocessors

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- A national organization representing conservative Jews has stopped short of calling for a boycott of kosher meat produced by the Agriprocessors plant in Postville.

Rabbi Jerome Epstein, the executive vice president and chief executive of the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism, says conservative Jews should instead consider for themselves whether they should buy products from the plant.

Epstein says the allegations of worker abuse -- not the recent immigration raid at the plant -- have raised concerns about eating Agriprocessors products.

Epstein says a joint commission of his group and the Rabbinical Assembly, which represents conservative rabbis, decided that a boycott was not warranted because the allegations were not proven.
