CA: Immigration crackdown for balanced budget

    Immigration crackdown for balanced budget

SACRAMENTO, CA (KGO) -- State Republican lawmakers unveiled a package of bills today, aimed at saving money and balancing the state budget by targeting illegal immigrants.

Assembly Republicans want to chip away at the state deficit by checking the immigration status of those getting state-funded social benefits and jobs. They especially want to crackdown on those who have committed crimes.

"California is on a financial life raft that is sinking, but at the same time, we continue to pull on more and more people on board," said Assemblyman Jim Silva (R) of Huntington Beach.

Many of the proposals concentrate on criminal activity because in 2006 - 2007, it cost the state roughly $850,000,000 million dollars to incarcerate more than 17,000 illegal immigrants.

    Among the proposals:
    - Adding ten years to prison sentences for felonies if the illegal had been previously deported.
    - Checking the immigration status of DUI offenders
    - Requiring local law enforcement to cooperate with INS
    - Denying bail for gang-related or violent crimes
    - And reporting dangerous juveniles to Immigration and Customs Enforcement for deportation.

The Vice-Chairman of the Latino Caucus is shaking his head in opposition.
"To the extent we have criminal activity in our state, we should address it very, very vigorously. But let's be focused on criminal activity, not on the status of an individual because that moves us toward patent, blatant discrimination," said state Senior Gil Cedillo (D) of Los Angeles.

Even if Republicans somehow got some of the proposals passed in the Democratic-led legislature, local leaders may be reluctant to add immigration duties to their police force.

"I think the law enforcement agencies in my city should be focused on crime and violence, which is starting to creep up," said San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom.

Assemblyman John Benoit(R) of Bermuda Dunes is a law enforcement veteran-turned politician, who says it's time cops are part of the solution.
"I have been involved in stopping, finding, and in some cases, deporting people here illegally. I think the rule of law is the reason the United States stands out among nations," said Assemblyman Benoit.

The federal government is supposed to help pay for jailing illegal immigrants who commit crimes, but California got reimbursed only $100,000,000 million dollars last year, less than 13 percent of the actual costs.

It doesn't matter if they get reimbursed by the federal government, it's not like it's free money. The money comes from somewhere. On a state level they need to do something and should have the right to since the effects of IA is felt on a local level. Jobs and benefits gone, so too will be IA once the freebies dry up. Anyone who says IA are an attribute are dense and ignorant and need to go too. Or perhaps tax those who are pro IA and those who aren't need not pay for it. Problem solved. Let's see how quickly those who are pro IA change their minds.

What total BS flows from this mans mouth! Everyone committing a crime should be made to prove their their legal status. If illegal, they must be deported (after serving their sentence) along with their entire family!

This of what a deterrant that would be for criminals, huh?

In other words lets focus on American criminals, not Mexican ones. In his view Mexicans and other Latinos who used forged work documents, sell our kids drugs, and kill Americans while DUI are not criminals committing crimes, they are simply poor people looking for a better life.

Have you heard the saying, when California sneezes, the rest of the country catches the flu? Generally what starts in California eventually spreads to the rest of the country. That is, unless a state takes measures to resist it. Unless every state realistically tackles illegal immigration by instituting Comprehensive Immigration ENFORCEMENT, which California has refused to do, this is what you can expect:

As of 2006, California contained greater than 25% of the total illegal alien population within the U.S. Many of these illegals concentrate in Los Angeles. New statistics from the Department of Public Social Services reveal that illegal aliens and their families in Los Angeles County collected over $37 million in welfare and food stamp allocations in November 2007 – up $3 million dollars from September. Twenty five percent of the all welfare and food stamps benefits are going directly to the children of illegal aliens. Illegals collected over $20 million in welfare assistance for November 2007 and over $16 million in monthly food stamp allocations for a projected annual cost of $444 million. “This new information shows an alarming increase in the devastating impact Illegal immigration continues to have on Los Angeles County taxpayers,â€

Gil Cedillo. Another pro-illegal invader who is only concerned with promoting his ethno-centric agenda, irrespective of the harm and destruction it causes this state!

How do these people get voted into office! The only people these guys seem to want to protect are the illegal invaders. Are these the people voting them into office?

Indirectly yes, illegals and immigrants elected Gil Cedillo. Most of the illegals and immigrants are put into liberal "Democratic" districts, so while most of them do not vote they get representation anyway. I think this type of districting is unconstitutional but so far nobody has challenged it.

The case you cite is different, almost all the people in that district are US Citizens.
