Prince William May Deplete Reserves to Fund Crackdown

Prince William May Deplete Reserves to Fund Crackdown
posted 12:54 pm Sun February 03, 2008 - Manassas, Va. from ABC 7

Prince William County is considering using almost its entire contingency reserve fund to help pay for the illegal immigration crackdown it passed last year.

On Tuesday, the Board of County Supervisors will discuss whether to transfer nearly $800,000 from the reserves to the police department to enforce the measures. Doing so would nearly wipe out the county's reserves for this fiscal year, which ends in June.

County officials set aside a $900,000 surplus last year to pay for the crackdown, but they knew that would not be enough. The state then cut nearly $600,000 from county police services.

Supervisors are anticipating a $51 million budget shortfall this year and are likely to raise taxes.
