The death toll from the H1N1 flu outbreak in Juárez has risen to five within a month, with 48 Juárez residents already infected with the H1N1 virus, Chihuahua health authorities said Wednesday.

The deaths of two people in Juárez - one of them a traffic police officer - were confirmed as a result of the H1N1 virus March 20.

Juárez health authorities issued an alert upon linking those deaths to the H1N1 virus and had applied more than 269,815 vaccines so far in Juárez, officials said.

Juárez residents, mainly pregnant women, are encouraged to get the vaccine. It is free for everybody, officials said.

A 60-year-old man suffering from the H1N1 virus has died, becoming the second such death this year, city health officials said Thursday afternoon.

The man was suffering from other conditions but the cause of death was listed as 'influenza pneumonia,' said Armando Saldivar, city of El Paso Department of Public Health spokesman.

The number of reported cases has declined sharply in the past several weeks, officials said. In January, there were 357 reported cases; in February, 302 Cases; in March, 136 cases; and so far in April, there are 18 cases.

H1N1 influenza, or swine flu, was listed as a secondary cause of death for a 76-year-old man who died in February, Saldivar said.

Adults and children can receive free vaccinations from 10 a.m.

to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Bassett Place Mall, 6101 Gateway West. Other types of immunizations for children also will be available for $10 for one and $20 for two more.

Clients must bring immunization records. Parents or guardians of minors must have a picture identification and documentation of guardianship. Cash, local checks, Medicaid, and CHIP will be accepted.
