AZ: Kyl Tells Town Hall GOP Will Filibuster Immig. Reform

More than 350 attend Kyl's town hall meeting

BY CHRIS McDANIEL - SUN STAFF WRITER

More than 350 Yuma citizens gathered at the Kofa High School Auditorium Wednesday evening to participate in a town hall featuring Senator Jon Kyl, R-Ariz.

Kyl touched on several topics including the threat of terrorism, immigration and government spending.

"The first obligation of the Federal Government is to protect the people of the United States of America," Kyl said during the town hall. "The number one threat to our security these days is the threat from al-Qaida and other groups and from countries like Iran, North Korea and so on."

Kyl is concerned with how rapidly the government is expanding, and the apparent diminishment of liberties.

"(Health Care legislation) is a symptom of a lot of other pieces of legislation that... little by little... increase the control and growth and size of the government," he said. "To the extent that government grows, our rights are diminished. Our founding fathers understood that, and that is why they wanted the government to be controlled by the people."

Kyl wants Americans to be self sufficient.

"Over the years, our citizens have gradually... ceded power to Washington ordinarily to get some kind of benefit, or the relief of some concern to make life easier. A lot of European countries make life very pleasant for you here on Earth, but is that real living? And if you can't take responsibility for the little things, will you ever be able to face up to the challenges when they get here?"

After a brief opening statement, Kyl took questions from attendees who patiently stood in line to get their say.

There were many members in the audience who shared Kyl's concerns about tax and spend policies.

"Stop billing my children's money and stop raising the debt limit... They are bankrupting the country," said Nathan Smith of Yuma. "I am working my (tail) off and they are ruining my children's lives. They are going to be slaves. Not on my watch!"

Kyl agreed saying, "Stop spending. That is it. Politicians love to spend your money in order to do a favor for somebody else. There is the sense that (American dollars) are almost like Monopoly money and we can keep printing it."

One man in the audience asked Kyl about the GOP's strategy to curtail the efforts of the Democrat controlled congress and executive branch.

"First of all our strategy on health care included taking as long as we possibly could so the American people could clearly understand (it).. and it took a year for it to get done," Kyl said, adding they will do their best to slow up any other bills, like immigration reform, in the same manner.

"My guess is (immigration reform) won't have the votes to pass, but political promises have been made to key constituency of the party that is in power. Republicans will use the opportunity to filibuster..."

There were many members of the Colorado River Tea Party in the audience, including Troy Forbus, who said he came away from the town hall with a positive experience.

"The thing about the senator is, even though some of his answers got to be a little long, he stayed on subject and reiterated the main points that were brought to him, and I appreciate that."

Tread lightly, Kyl, least the liberals call you a protectionist.

    Dear WeNeedAFence.com supporters:

Our friend and coalition partner Roy Beck at NumbersUSA sent out the following alert just a few minutes ago:

President Bush will meet personally with Republican Senators on Tuesday to implore them to change their votes from last Thursday and support the Kennedy/Kyl/McCain S. 1348 Comprehensive Amnesty Bill in a possible re-vote.

This will be perhaps the most dangerous moment for us this summer.

Please ... PHONE your GOP Senators, plus last week's anti-amnesty Democratic Senators at:

202-224-3121 (ask for the Senator by name). Note to Friends of WNAF: We have direct dial phone and fax numbers on our website, www.WeNeedAFence.com

The pro-amnesty forces have worked diligently all weekend to overturn the Senate's rejection on Thursday of the Kennedy/Kyl/McCain Comprehensive Amnesty Bill.

Bush Administration officials are saying that the President will throw all of his influence this week into persuading the 38 GOP Senators who voted against amnesty last week that they were wrong.

Senate Democratic leaders are waiting to see if the President can twist enough Republican arms before deciding whether to bring the S. 1348 Amnesty back up for amendments and a final vote.

. ACTION 1: Phone the Republican Senators in your state and urge them to stand firm against the President's entreaties on Tuesday.

. ACTION 2: If your state has a Democratic or Independent Senator who voted NO on S. 1348 last week, phone them to resist any effort to persuade them to help President Bush achieve his top domestic goal.

. ACTION 3: For those of you who do NOT have a Senator in those first two groups, I urge you to look for one or two of the smaller states that are in your region of the country that do have Senators in those first two groups, and call them.

President Bush said this weekend that he understands that a lot of Americans and Senators have trouble with a deal that allows legalization of 12-20 million illegal aliens in exchange for heavy-duty enforcement in the future.

He says he understands that many Americans don't trust that the Federal government will live up to the enforcement end of the bargain because of past failure to do so.

But President Bush says he will go to Capitol Hill Tuesday, look the Republicans in the eye and assure them that they can trust him to see that all enforcement happens.

There is something terribly strange about his whole argument.

It is as if the President who has refused to enforce most immigration laws the last six years is somebody other than himself.

In addition, President Bush appears to be saying, "You can trust me to enforce the law if you approve the amnesty" but he is suggesting that without passing the amnesty the illegal immigration problem is going to grow far worse because the President won't be enforcing the law!"

Lying traitor, Lying traitor, Lying traitor. McCain, Kyl, my favorites and locals Chambliss and Isakson who HELPED write the amnesty bill back then. They only opposed it when they felt our wrath. They will trying again. And again. And again. They are like my small grandchildren, no matter how many times I say no, they keep asking expecting a different answer.
