PHOENIX - A judge on Friday dismissed parts of the federal government's challenge to Arizona's new immigration law.

But U.S. District Judge Susan Bolton's ruling didn't have any effect on the portions of the law that she prevented from taking effect.

Bolton denied Gov. Jan Brewer's request to dismiss the challenge of the law's most controversial sections.

But Bolton dismissed the remainder of the federal challenge. The remainder of the law is now in effect.

An appeals court is considering Brewer's appeal of the ruling that blocked parts of the law.

The blocked sections include a requirement that local police, while enforcing other laws, question the immigration status of those they suspect are in the country illegally.
